Dr. Greg Reinhart and Dr. Lanying Zeng were please to hear that Ms. Qiuyan Shao was selected for this year’s Ethel Ashworth-Tsutsui Memorial Award for Research from the Department of Biochemistry and Biphysics. Qiuyan joined the department in 2011 and has made tremendous contributions to basic science already and we feel confident, she will continue to do so. She studies how DNA replication affects the cell-fate decision. She has three publications and has attended over 10 presentations and symposiums. The Dr. Ethel Ashworth-Tsutsui Memorial Award was established to honor women graduate students who have demonstrated excellence in research. Dr. Tsutsui was a Professor of Biochemistry and Biophysics at Texas A&M University where she taught biology and biochemistry from 1969 until her death in January 1998. The Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) sponsors this award program in honor and remembrance of Ethel Ashworth-Tsutsui. Dr. Tsustui was a founding member of WISE and cared deeply about the retention and recognition of women in our graduate programs. We know Dr. Tsutusi would be well pleased with the selection of Qiuyan for this research award. Congratulations Qiuyan.
