For the second year in a row, one of our majors has been selected as a Rhodes Finalist. (Last year it was Matt Hickey, now a first year medical student at UCSF.) We have some fantastic undergrads in our program! Please notice at the bottom of this announcement that the last Rhodes Scholar from Texas A&M was Nick Anthis '05, also one of our majors.

First Feast

The BGA and the administrative staff worked together to host a departmental Thanksgiving feast on Thursday, Nov. 20, 2008. There was lots of food, lots of attendees and before it was over, there was lots of full tummies. A big thanks goes out to everyone who pitched in to make our first Departmental Thanksgiving Feast such a huge success and a special thanks to Andrew Nelson who made the idea come to life!

It gives me great pleasure to announce that Xiuren Zhang, currently a postdoctoral fellow at Rockefeller University, has accepted our offer to become an assistant professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics and in the Institute for Plant Genomics and Biotechnology. Although Xiuren's laboratory will be located in the Borlaug Center and he will be a member of the IPBG, in all other respects Xiuren will be a full member of this department. He will likely start his appointment in August, 2008.
